Wines
After
prohibition, the wine industry was totally devastated and left
several wineries making only altar wine. During
prohibition, instead of planting vineyards with wine grapes,
they were filled with table grapes such as Thompson Seedless.
The average person either made wine himself from fruit or grapes
that were available, or they bought commercial wine that was made
from concord grapes such as Mogen David. Most of the wines
available in the Untied States were sweet wines.
During this time, the rest of the world had developed many advancements
in the wine industry. The newly developed "wine snobs"
looked down their noses at the American wine industry.
Great
strides in replanting the vineyards with varietal grapes and blending
them to an agreeable taste took several generations. Large
wineries such as Ernest and Julio Gallo, strived to make every
day wine drinking tasty and economical. Because of this
transition, the accepted style of wine changed from super sweet
to slightly sweet and then to dry table wine. Now
varietal wines have evolved from the exception to the standard.
Varietal wines are wines that are named after the variety grape
that makes up 60% of the wine. Examples of these are:
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Chardonnay
- Merlot
- Johannisberg Riesling
American
wines are now some of the finest in the world.
